Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) is a highly contagious virus that causes respiratory illness in dogs. It is spread by contact with an infected dog or contact with contaminated objects. CIV causes fever, lethargy, sneezing, and coughing. Most cases are self-limiting, but some cases will progress to serious illness and sometimes death. The disease occurs year-round throughout the US. There are currently two strains of CIV present in North America.
How do I know if my dog has been exposed?
Dogs with CIV are contagious before they appear sick. Since CIV is easily spread and can cause serious illness, protection is important. Protection should include keeping your dog away from obviously sick dogs and practicing good hygiene in areas where dogs congregate. However, dogs can spread CIV before they appear sick,
What do we recommend?
Vaccination is important. We recommend vaccination with a bivalent CIV vaccine that protects against both strains of the virus.
